Tyler, The Creator Recalls Being Helped By Frank Ocean

The Odd Future collective’s infiltration into the worlds of music, fashion and television can obscure the fact that Frank Ocean was actually one of the first members of the crew sign a recording contract. Ocean was inked to Def Jam—where his work was shelved before he decided to release Nostalgia, Ultra on his own—before the “Yonkers” video went viral. In a brief interview with GQ magazine, Tyler the Creator reflected on those early days when he got a helping hand from Frank Ocean.

“That’s my nigga, because I was broke as fuck a year and a couple months ago,” Tyler revealed, in a brief interview for GQ’s Men of the Year 2012 series. “He would take me and a couple other friends to random restaurants and meet all his other famous friends and shit. It was cool. It was like this other life I didn’t know. He had a nice ass car.”

After signing a distribution deal with Sony, Tyler noted that the nice cars are spread around the rest of the crew. But he also praised his fellow Odd Future member’s solo debut, Channel Orange, which is close to being certified gold domestically.

“I first heard Channel Orange like in pieces,” Tyler added. “[Frank Ocean] took me to the studio and played me pieces, and I was stoked. My favorite is “Sierra Leone.” I actually don’t know what the fuck he’s talking about on “Sierra Leone,” I just like the way it sounds if you want to know the truth.”

Nicki Minaj Demands Hot 97 Not Play Her Music Anymore

Despite patching things up after this year’s Summer Jam fiasco, it looks like Nicki Minaj is at odds with Hot 97 once again. Now, in a recent interview with Cipha Sounds and Rosenberg, Hot 97′s program director Ebro says Nicki told him she doesn’t want the station playing anymore of her music.

Ebro explained that the most recent tiff with Minaj began after he said that Rosenberg’s comments ruined her career when her rap-heavy Pink Friday Roman Reloaded: The Re-Up only moved 36,000 units upon its release. According to Ebro, the YMCMB starlet called him from overseas, insulted him and demanded he never play her music on air again.

“I said, ‘Rosenberg ruined Nicki Minaj’s career’ – evidence suggests based on this Re-Up release, the things [Rosenberg] said about her being pop and selling out and making that pop music came back to haunt her,” he said. “Now, she puts six rap records on this album and it didn’t sell…I get the phone call, the international number pops up, I answer the call, it’s my friend Nicki Minaj, who then starts to proclaim how I’m fake. She used every woman’s stab she could – ‘I thought you were a man, you’re a cornball, I thought we were friends, you’re fake, everyone told me you were fake’…I said, ‘Nicki, I’m helping you. I’m keeping you in the Hip Hop conversation. This Hip Hop thing’s a competition; you’re either ringing, or you’re not, and just like I said yesterday, i love you, boo and I’ll dust you off and make sure this thing is popping off again.’ And she goes, ‘Don’t ever play my music again’…of course we are [still playing Nicki Minaj], I love Nicki Minaj.”

Former Ghostwriter Debunks Myth That Suge Knight Assaulted Vanilla Ice

One of Hip Hop’s most notorious tall-tales is that the infamous Suge Knight dangled Vanilla Ice off a hotel balcony in order to extort back-end publishing credits for his hit “Ice Ice Baby.” Now, in a recent interview with LA Weekly, one of Ice’s ghostwriters claims that the incident is false.

Mario “Chocolate” Johnson, a former collaborator of Vanilla Ice, alleges that Suge Knight never put his hands on the Miami rapper. Johnson, who was managed Knight at the time of the reported incident, recalled the hotel meeting between Ice, Knight and himself, saying that their lawsuit for producer credits was handled professionally and without any threat of violence from either party.

“We knew where [Vanilla Ice] was staying because I was supposed to be hearing some tracks he was doing. He wanted me to come by myself. But Suge said, ‘I’m going with you,’” he recalled. “When we went to the hotel that day, it was strictly for conversation. Nobody got pushed – nobody argued, no shoving – nothing…when we got there everything was peaceful. Attorney David Kenner showed up, took a statement, and we got all our paperwork together. We didn’t make [Vanilla Ice] sign papers. Our attorneys, through Sony, fought my case against Vanilla Ice.”

He continued, “Vanilla Ice made so much up in his mind, he actually started believing it. ‘Cause I was there; no threatening, no nothin’. We had a normal conversation. He tried to pay Suge for my flight ticket for comin’ out there to produce stuff…we sued using normal courts and attorneys. You just heard it from me. It was more than a year in the settlement of that lawsuit that Chocolate finally got paid. Doesn’t mean [Vanilla Ice] didn’t get hung over a balcony, but if he did, it didn’t make him pay.”
