Sean “Diddy” Combs Tops Forbes’ “Wealthiest Hip Hop Artist List”

Sean “Diddy” Combs is still very much on top. With a net worth above half a billion dollars, the Bad Boy founder has topped Forbes’ list of five “Wealthiest Hip Hop Artists.”

The New York native is worth $580 million and even though the list spotlights artists, the brunt of Combs’ fortune came from non-music ventures. Among the deals fattening his pockets is his work with Diageo’s Ciroc. In promoting the vodka brand, the father of six nets an eight-figure annual salary, plus a nine-figure windfall, if the liquor brand is ever sold. “It is one of the fastest-growing brands within vodka,” noted Jack Russ, equity analyst at Edward Jones & Co. “Consumers are feeling a little bit better about their situation, and with that they’re willing to spend more on premium products.”

While Diddy has done well for himself, another big name in Hip-Hop is not too far from taking over the top spot: Jay-Z . Hovito came in 2nd place, with a net worth of $475 million, due in part to the 2007 sale of Rocawear, which brought him $204 million, and a $150 million deal with Live Nation.

Jay also holds stakes in his Roc Nation imprint, Carol’s Daughter, the Brooklyn Nets, and the Barclays Center.

Next on the list is Dr. Dre, whose Beats by Dre headphones brought his net worth to $350 million. Rounding out the Top 5 are Bryan “Birdman” Williams worth $150 million thanks to the growing Cash Money/Young Money empire, while 50 Cent takes the last spot with $125 million. 50 hasn’t dropped an album in almost four years, but earned much of his money from previous releases, and income from merchandise, video games, books, and the check he received from Coca-Cola’s 2007 acquisition of Vitamin Water, in which he holds a stake.

Danny Brown & Baauer Announce “Worst of Both Worlds” Tour

The Hip-Hop and EDM worlds will collide on a forthcoming tour featuring Danny Brown and Baauer, who will hit the road in April on the aptly titled “Worst Of Both Worlds” tour. Considering the polarizing effect Baauer’s viral smash “Harlem Shake,” which recently inspired a spirited rendition from the Miami Heat, and the uninhibited antics of the snaggletoothed Brown, this short tour may very well be a vessel for the turn up.

The line of shows will kick off April 9 at Fitzgerald’s in Houston, Tex., but will only span a mere 11 days. During that time Baauer and Brown will hit eight other cities throughout the West Coast. This will include two show’s at this year’s Coachella Festival, where the Wu-Tang Clan, Earl Sweatshirt, 2 Chainz, and more are among the Hip-Hop acts set to take the stage.

“Worst Of Both Worlds” will be brought to you by the good folks at Fool’s Gold, which houses Danny Brown is signed to and Baauer is affiliate with. At the moment there’s no word on if the duo’s performances will be integrated, but it’s needless to say that things will surely be interesting. See the full list of dates on the show art below.

Police Investigating Death Threats Made Against Rick Ross

RickyRozay

Last week, the world of Hip Hop was shocked to learn that Rick Ross cancelled the remainder of his Maybach Music Group tour over threats of gang violence. Now, in a recent report from TMZ, it appears that police are investigating into the matter.

The Chicago Police Department is beginning to investigate the threats levied at the Carol City rapper by the notorious Chicago-based gang the Gangster Disciples. Prior to the North Carolina leg of Rozay’s tour, the GD’s posted a video threatening the rapper’s life if he were to perform.

According to the video, the GD’s are demanding that Ross pay them for likening himself to the gang’s founder, Larry Hoover, in his song “B.M.F. (Blowin’ Money Fast).” They are also claiming that he ripped off their six-pointed star gang symbol on the cover of his mixtape The Black Bar Mitzvah.

Text messaging celebrates 20-year anniversary

Monday is a special anniversary for the communications industry. It was 20 years ago that Neil Papworth sent the first ever text message.

Papworth, a British engineer, was 22-years-old when he sent the first ever Short Messaging Service (SMS) from his computer to a friend’s cell phone.

The message simply read: “Merry Christmas.”

Texting had a slow start, but eventually it surged in popularity, especially when it became cheaper than calling.

It is the single most-widely used application in the world – 81-percent of mobile phone subscribers use it.

Now, free alternatives like instant messaging apps are becoming more and more popular, and text messaging is in decline.

According to Britain’s independent communications industries regulator OFCOM, more than 150 billion texts were sent in 2011 alone.

The most frequent texters in the UK are 12 to 15 year olds, who send an average of 193 per week.

Rick Ross Sued For $226K Over 15-Minute Performance

From no-show’s to impostors, some Hip Hop artists are notorious for their lacking live performances. Now, it appears that Rick Ross has been hit with a lawsuit for turning in a paltry 15-minute performance.

According to AllHipHop, the MMG impresario was recently slammed with a $226,000 lawsuit over a less-than-satisfactory performance. SM Global Union agreed to pay Ross $90,000 for an hour long set, but the Miami rapper walked off stage after only 15-minutes.

Ross isn’t the only emcee named in the lawsuit, however. SM Global Union is also suing tour-mates Meek Mill and Waka Flocka Flames for breach of contract after both failed to promote the event on Facebook and Twitter as contractually stipulated.

This isn’t the first time the Bawse has been sued for the quality of his live show; last year, Nigeria’s Cross River State sued him after he bailed on its Calabar Festival
